Hing Lung Company is a no-frills Chinese takeaway and casual eatery tucked into the bustling Post Street corridor just north of downtown San Francisco. It’s the kind of place locals turn to when they’re craving straightforward, hearty flavors—especially if roast duck or barbecue pork is top of mind. The atmosphere is practical and efficient, fitting its primary role as a quick grab-and-go spot, though there is room for dining in if you want to sit down for a fast, unfussy meal.

The standout here seems to be their roast duck and char siu, which draw a steady stream of repeat customers who appreciate lean, tender cuts with bold seasoning rather than overly sweet or heavily sauced versions. The roast duck comes with its signature plum sauce and au jus, adding complimentary layers of flavor that balance the meat’s richness. Portion sizes lean towards generous, especially for dishes like the half or whole roast duck offerings, making it easy to share or enjoy as leftovers the next day.

Besides roast duck, Hing Lung has an intriguing menu with congee variations, noodle dishes, and rice plates loaded with meats like pork jowls and spareribs. Side dishes like pan-fried pumpkin and taro cakes or curry fish balls add a local Cantonese diner vibe that's uncommon to find in quick Chinese takeout joints. People who appreciate authentic, homestyle eats with a focus on texture and variety will likely find plenty to explore here.

Service at Hing Lung feels friendly and straightforward, with staff members willing to explain menu items or suggest combinations that work well together—something not all fast-paced takeaway spots prioritize. While prices have crept up over recent years, the quality and portion sizes still make it worthwhile for those looking to indulge in comforting Chinese roast specialties without pretense.

For visitors and locals alike, a midday or early evening stop gives a glimpse into a working-class Chinatown-flavored neighborhood hangout where the emphasis is fully on the food’s authenticity. Expect a casual, somewhat busy environment mostly populated by those snapping up meals for home or office rather than lingering over long dinners. Hing Lung Company fits well for anyone who knows what they want: solid roast meats, old-school sides, and a no muss, no fuss approach to Chinese comfort cuisine in San Francisco.

Best char siu (barbecue pork) and roasted duck in SF! We got half duck and half pound of char siu and made noodles with them! Love how lean yet tender and flavourful the meat is. Staff were super helpful and friendly! Would definitely go back!

All over social media, people are saying this place has THE BEST roast duck in the country! So I had to check it out for myself.... I got half a duck and this was plenty for my boyfriend and I to share. If I'm being picky, the duck was on the salty side. However, it's very flavorful and savory. Not very sweet like other places. The duck pieces didn't have a ton of meat on them, but the pieces that had more meat were pretty juicy. Overall, not the best duck I've had - but definitely good quality! I'd recommend it to those visiting SF Chinatown.

Fantastic takeout! The pork came with ginger scallion chutney - so delicious! Never had that before. And the duck noodles are a huge portion - yum!

Best Roast Duck I’ve had in the city! It tastes even better knowing no MSG is used! I got the Half Roast Duck over Rice with Bok Choy plate. Au Jus and Plum Sauce included! That Plum sauce is heavenly! It runs about $20 (in person) but it’s worth it.

Inflation sucks! Bought 3 meat rice for 23 bucks. Cost only $13 two years ago. That's 10 bucks increase! Ordered pork belly, Roast duck and char siew. Came with rice and veggie and 4 sauces. Roast duck was good. Char siew was yums. But for USD23 bucks......a bit pricey... Maybe just roast duck or 2 meat rice next time...can forgo the pork belly. Maybe Hing Lung should put up the prices for 1 meat, 2 meat and 3 meat rice next time, like they used to do. Just a suggestion.

Ok, this place actually lived up to its reputation for tasty Hong Kong Style BBQ. Too many places are rated by foodies and most have no idea what good Chinese food is supposed to be. This BBQ meats are pretty close to what I used to get when lived in Hong Kong. Wish it’s a little cleaner and less hole in the wall. Get the char siu and roasted pork belly.
